Roll up your sleeves: Auckland Startup Weekend - April 1st - 3rd !

Been walking around with that lightbulb above your head, thinking to yourself, "What if?" "How could I?" "Where do I even begin?" Save those questions in your back pocket and gear up for the Auckland Startup Weekend coming up on April 1st - 3rd!  What is this? From Startupweekend.org: 

 54-hour events where developers, coders, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and create startups!

. . . weekend-long, hands-on experiments where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable.  Most events have about 75 attendees, half of which have technical backgrounds and the other half have business backgrounds.

With access to mentors and collaborators to really give life to your ideas, or for you to be a part of an incredible startup project, this is worth a try. After all,  the winner of last month's LA StartupWeekend raised $1M in three weeks! Perhaps Rod Drury of Xero was right in saying in Computerworld that Silicon Valley careers can be had here in New Zealand.

Let's face it. Anytime New Zealand beat the Aussies in anything is time for celebration. Be it sport, IQ, or technology. So there's no holding back when sixteen innovative Kiwi technology companies "out-blinged" them with our ICT presence at CeBIT.

Kudos to Zephyr Technology for being featured on the BBC Technology website. They're a leader in Smart Fabric sensor technology, developing physiological monitoring products for the medical, sports and wellness and defence markets. They look like an interesting company with a growing niche - which seems to be a trademark of home-grown technology companies that embark on the global playing field.

ARCast NZ is live!

I just wanted to spread the word on ARCast NZ -  an official offshoot of Ron Jacobs' International ARCast. Since 2005, Ron Jacobs has been interviewing architects all around the globe and giving insight into the world of architecture. ARCast NZ is hosted by Lukas Svoboda and is focused on the software and infrastructure architecture community in New Zealand. He's planning at least one cast a month looking at relevant issues in the local NZ architecture community.

The first interview is "How to convince management that letting a Developer become an Architect is a good idea". Well worth a listen!

Invite2GO - Mapping Your Appointments

Had a great new tool brought to my attention late last week. Invite2Go has just been released from innovative Auckland tech company GeoSmart. Basically it's a web app that lets you send invites to people with your address, when they get your invite they can immediately plug in where they are coming from and are given door-to-door directions to your office anywhere in New Zealand. Obviously this is a pretty neat solution for Recruiters who need to set up interviews for candidates and want to make sure they get good directions to their interview spots.

NZ is getting it's own Foo Camp and I haven't been invited. Oh well, I guess I will have to keep working on it. Foo Camp seems like a brilliant idea though, the more networking we get going on through the NZ tech community has got to be good in my opinion.

So what do you think are New Zealand's greatest engineering feats? The results are in from a survey of University of Auckland engineering graduates to mark the centenary of the University's Faculty of Engineering. Not surprisingly sport figures in the top three. It will be interesting to see the results to a similar survey in 50 years? Maybe a  certain Auckland Waterfront Stadium?

Big opportunity for students interested in breaking into the software industry in Wellington. On the ProjectX blog they have the schedule for "Summer of Code" seminars. It includes big names from many of the up and coming startups and already successful software/web businesses in NZ. As far as learning goes for developers it looks like a can't miss chance.
